Professional Q+A: Mr Siew Yap Wong

Tue, 31 October, 2023

With this year marking one-hundred years of The Welding Institute, we have been speaking to some of our Professional Members about their careers and memories of Institute membership.

Mr Siew Yap Wong is one of our longest-serving members, having first joined as a Student Member 44 years ago, while studying at Cranfield University.

Having worked as a welding research engineer for British Steel in Middlesbrough following his studies, Mr Wong then returned to Malaysia where his growing knowledge and expertise saw him hold a number of different roles, eventually becoming the first local person to head Malaysia Oxygen Berhad.

Mr Wong told us about his career journey as well as the reason why he went from an interest in aerospace engineering to studying mechanical engineering and then eventually finding an interest in welding and fabrication.

We also heard how his membership of The Welding Institute has aided his career as well as helping inspire his own work to foster welding knowledge in Malaysia.

Becoming a Fellow in 2019, Mr Wong not only speaks on his Institute membership, but also offers some sound career advice for his younger self.

You can see Mr Wong’s interview in full on The Welding Institute website, here.
